Fellow's answer:
The Shimmy is designed to remove grinds (smaller than 200-microns) that may “choke” or clog your brew, but don't just throw them out. Fines can be re-purposed in a variety of ways: baking, cooking, cleaning, or even gardening. Coffee grinds are also biodegradable so they can be composted.
A few observations about coffee sieving remain generally true:
- The finer the grind adjustment, the more potential for fines
- The longer you sieve (shake), the more fines you may collect
Trials conducted produced the following results:
Grind Adjustment | Sieve Time (s) | Bean Weight In (g) | Bean Weight Out (g) | Grind Weight After Sieve (g) | Sifted Grinds Weight (g) | Average |
4 | 30 | 40 | 39.5 | 36.2 | 3.2 | 8.07% |
